Hide Away by Jason Pinter

4.0

The last time I read a crime novel, I thought, I wonder if there are any feminist crime novels? Because I wanted women to be more than dead plot devices.

Hide Away comes closer to being feminist. The lead character, Rachel Marin, is quite kick ass: she boxes and does strength training; she can do complex maths in her head. There's a lesbian couple and they are normal. A young girl is encouraged in her story writing and ambition to be a writer. I realise I'm setting the bar for a feminist crime novel quite low.

There were a couple of things that mean this is 4 not 5 stars. Quite frequently Rachel Marin is referred to by other characters as 'that Marin woman' - I think it is supposed to be derogatory and express that the speaker is annoyed at her, but really who speaks like this?! It's rude and weird and used too often. Also, there are some small plot holes and what I'm going to call continuity errors.

All in all, enjoyable.
