The Wicked + The Divine, Vol. 9: Okay by Kieron Gillen

4.0

Wow! It is ended!

I am very glad to have finally read the entirety of the very epic, The Wicked + The Divine.

This series was always enjoyable - fresh, quirky, smart. Absolutely loved the artwork in every issue, and for the most part liked the storytelling style.

I will say that I remain confused about many things! The authors write the story with very few handholds, and casually reference information that might not have been mentioned since the first group of issues. I like that - but I also didn't like THIS enough to devote myself to the superfandom that I felt was sometimes required to fully know what was going on.

Having said that, though, if you do love this story - it is the kind of story worth reading again and again. I liked the characters, I liked the innovative nature of the storytelling, I liked the ending.

What I would say, is that I feel like the plot was... murky. It did not always feel like they had a plan. I think if I was reading this in real time, I would have found some of the issues absolutely maddening. And while the ending was satisfying, it felt a little rushed. And even though I think this was perhaps a feature rather than a bug, the story often felt like it was just out of frame. Like I was seeing a collection of scenes from the story, but not the whole thing. As a storytelling device? Cool. But for me trying to keep track of everything, perhaps a struggle.

At any rate, I will say again - very glad to have read this and marked this iconic series off the list.
