The Best Horror of the Year: Volume Twelve by Ellen Datlow

4.0

This was an almost-no-skips anthology. If you're a horror fan, I think there's probably something for you in here, no matter what flavor is your favorite.

My top three personal favorites were:

1. The Senior Girls' Bayonet Drill Team - Joe R. Lansdale
The The Hunger Games meets the color guard. There's something about the acknowledgement that teenage girls can be just as violent as teenage boys under the right (or wrong) conditions that just does it for me every time.

2. The Night Nurse - Sarah Langan
I'm still wrestling with this one in my head, because I honestly can't say that I wouldn't have made the same choice as the protagonist of the story. If you want to think about the nature of motherhood, identity, and the body, this is a good one.

3. The Butcher's Table - Nathan Ballingrud
I know everyone is talking about this one, but it's for a reason. I haven't read a novella this good in a long time. The world building was fantastic, the characters were interesting, and the story was just *fun*. This one leans a lot more dark fantasy than horror, if that's your jam.
