Гранатовый браслет by Aleksandr Kuprin

4.0

On my little roll of reading the Russian classic short stories, this was the shining star. I have always loved the symbolism of precious stones in Russian literature growing up—I was a huge fan of Bajov for that reason as well. As all pieces of this culture, The Garnet Bracelet is tortured, but oh so beautiful.
*spoilers ahead*
The fact that she does gain the powers given by the bracelet without her realization, just like she loves without the realization, is such a fine thread weaved in gold. Also, Jeltkovsky’s suicide was so foreshadowed throughout the whole story but god was I sad when it happened… Beautiful story of obsessive love, wish she kept the freaking bracelet…
