House Party by Justin A. Reynolds

4.0

A really fun read! It’s lighthearted, funny, really goofy at times but also tackling the stuff that can be confusing and difficult at that age. The characters were super diverse and easy to connect with. They’re written in such vivid ways that it’s easy to picture them or picture someone very much like them you might have once known. I love the variety in voices stemming from the different authors who took on each character. This would be an excellent book club choice for kids, where you could talk about the characters you identify with, agree with, etc. It’s so easy to imagine discussions around “who would you want to be friends with?” Or “what would you have done in so-and-so’s shoes?”

The book is organized into chapters by character name and how many chapters they’ve had, so it’s also a well structured book for people who may feel intimidated by the idea of interconnected stories. It makes it so easy to flip back and remind yourself who you’re back to reading about and what happened last with them.

This is a great summer read for someone who’s looking for a good time and doesn’t want to sit with heavier themes.
