The Dragon Book: Magical Tales from the Masters of Modern Fantasy by Jim Butcher

5.0

This was the finale of the Codex Alera series. At least I'm pretty sure that it is intended to be the last book. A major epic, First Lord's Fury sees Canim, Marat, Ice People, and Alerans all join forces to fight the hated Vord. It looks pretty bleak for a while, as the Vord pretty much take over the whole planet, except for a small area that Bernard has secretly been preparing for just such an event.

We see a political fight as a decision must be made as to who the new First Lord is to be, because the old one adopted Aquitaine as his heir right before he sacrificed himself in book 5. Eventually, this becomes moot.

The Vord Queen is a formidable foe, indeed, and we are not disappointed as an epic battle ensues between our hero, Gauis Octavius (hence the nickname "Tavi" all the way through the series), and the enemy queen. Tavi's Marat girlfriend, Kitai, becomes even more adorable, which I thought was not possible.

Butcher, in my opinion, as delivered a classic fantasy series with Codex Alera, and I will always treasure it as one of the best fantasy epics I have ever read.
