Jack Campbell always lets his navy experience inform his military space opera. Ascendant is no exception. His three main characters are involved in different sorts of action that one also commonly finds in C. S. Forester-influenced space opera—battles between ships in space, marine action to defend the port, and a covert agent on a ship being attacked by pirates. It could easily be something written by David Weber or any number of other writers in the genre. That is not to say it is not readable and entertaining. It is. But if you are looking for a book that breaks new ground in the genre, this isn’t it.
