Lish McBride is the perfect escape for me. I love her weaving of magical creatures/characters of all types into her plots. She keeps the YA tame - sexually charged but no actual sex. There's a bit of cussing but mostly it's pop culture references and snark. And lots of awesome characters and half-humans: weres, golems, pyrokinetic teens, vampires and ones I've never heard of (she made up?) like caulbearers.
My only criticism is that there are no twists. I'm always expecting a best friend character to turn traitor. After reading three of her books, and having zero twists, I'm thinking it's unlikely to happen for some reason. That's fine.
If you like any of these things I've just mentioned, pick up a McBride!! Any will do. :)
