The Hunter and the Mage by Kaitlyn Davis

5.0

When people asked me what my favorite book of 2020 was so far, I always answered The Raven and the Dove, a book I already read in January, but no other book has left the same impression on me so far. I was therefore really looking forward to the Hunter and the Mage and I was happy that I was allowed to read an ARC of this book. So, yesterday morning I opened the book and started. Worst idea ever. I had some issues putting the book away to get to work. However, today was my day off so my first thing on the to do list was finishing this masterpiece.

This book truly is a masterpiece. This will be a four book series and quite often you see then that the second and third book are not as exciting as the first. Not in this case. This book introduces us once more to a new part of the world and therefore feels more like an extra first book. Our characters are thrown into the one part of the world they knew nothing about and together with them we get to know the people living there and the challenges those people face.

There is also not one moment in this book that the plot is dragging. It’s constantly moving forward, going somewhere. The characters are the true stars, following their journeys and learning their lessons, but everything we read, everything we see, every scene we witness is important. Eventually, when we reach the ending of the book and a lot of things come together I just read faster and faster because I had to know how it ended.

Another thing Davis does amazingly well is the romance. The story is based on the legend of Tristan and Isolde and the first book was already heartbreaking, but the waiting and the building of the suspense in this book is even better. There are so many moments I was holding my breath, so many moments I was hoping and praying and wishing. Sometimes I eventually got what I wanted, sometimes I had to wait a little bit longer.

So, when does book three come out? I WANT AND NEED MORE! (I most of all need more Xander! As a girl with a disability his journey really speaks to me! I can’t wait to see where it will end!)

If my review convinced you of the awesomeness of this book (trust me, it’s a great epic fantasy romance!) make sure to get book one (if you didn’t already) and pre-order book two. Davis has a lovely pre-order action where you can get goodies! If you’re in America you’re lucky and will get them printed, but if you’re like me far away you will get digital copies to print yourself!
