Iron Man Vol. 1: Big Iron by Christopher Cantwell

4.0

Picked up this series in single issue from my local comic con. I like Christopher Cantwell so I figured I'd give it a shot.

The good:

Tony wrestling with ego and identity. It feels familiar, but somehow fresh.
The Hellcat relationship is great.
The mutant kid is a great dynamic.
Unlike golden and silver age comics, he has lots of strong female characters that push him around and challenge his ego.
The art is great, the Alex Ross covers are next-level awesome.

The bad:
The villain is... just another villain. He's super powerful yada yada, but the real enemy of this series is Tony's inner turmoil and the villain does nothing to add complexity to that.

The series itself seems to be wrestling a bit with super hero fatigue. People don't like straight-up heroes anymore, they have to vilify every hero. Tony believes that he is a hero and that the public has turned on him because they can't handle true heroes anymore. This is a great mixture of real sentiment in the public combined with Tony's ego.
