Split Infinity by Piers Anthony
4.0
I haven't read a ton by Piers Anthony yet but what I have read I have enjoyed. Split Infinity is a very interesting start to what I hope will be a very interesting series in which the author blends traditional fantasy and sci-fi into one very intriguing story. It is well written, witty, and amusing 'til the very end and I very much look forward to reading the next two books in the set.
For those wondering what on Earth the book is even about - here's a quick and hopefullly vague summary:
More or less it takes place on one planet in two dimensions; in one science rules supreme in a futuristic domed city that stretches across a desolate planetary surface - but a hop skip and a jump across an invisible curtain puts you in a world full of magic beauty. The main character, a rather short serf in his mid-thirties (also a lover of horses and a master at the Game),with the help of his new friends (a self-willed robot girl, a shape-changing unicorn mare, and a were-wolf) makes his first steps (in both dimensions) toward figuring out who in the world he is and why so many people apparently want him dead.
