This book is clearly the first book of a new author, and with it comes the stumbling with pacing and reveals at times as she feels it out in a way that no amount of editing can hide. This will be off-putting for some, or even most readers.
It’s a slow start to acclimatise you to the world and characters and due to the author finding their feet. It more than makes up for it with gorgeous writing and prose that grounds you in the series, some of the best I have read in over a decade; she’s truly gifted.
It ends on a cliffhanger; however given everything, I strongly believe that now all the groundwork is out of the way that the second and third books in this series are set up to be brilliant.
If you’re ready to give some grace to a new author, this has the potential to be a breakthrough with books two and three. If you’re impatient, wait to start this when book two is already out.
