I'd forgotten about the transgender/gay representation in this book (a surprise, to be sure, and not altogether unpleasant) as well as its abundant references to urine and feces. XP

I think the pacing and characters are very well done, and I enjoyed the story in spite of its somewhat crude vocabulary.

UPDATE:
I DO NOT recommend this book or its sequel to any transgender readers! The trans character is consistently and repeatedly misgendered, even after explaining to Beka that she identifies as female. This is never addressed or corrected.
