How It Happened by Michael Koryta

3.0

This was sure shaping up to be a 5-star read for over 50% of this novel.

Michael Koryta can certainly hook you into a story with a great plot and characters you can care about, as he did in his terrific The Prophet.

The story starts off with a confession of "How it Happened", and FBI agent Rob Barrett, who specializes in confessions, sets off to validate the words of an imprisoned junkie.

Excellent plot developments pulled me along this story, but unfortunately things got a bit too convoluted once the drug angle became predominant. I also began to question the actions of a man who is willing to destroy his young career for the sake of finding answers that, frankly, won't bring anyone back or save anyone's life.

Anyways, the book did have a strong second-last chapter, but I'm ultimately disappointed with where the plot went for the last half.
Just a personal preference. I'll give this one 3 stars but I sure wish it kept my 5-star feel I had for half of it. When Koryta is jibing with me, it's excellent reading.
