The Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory

emotional funny hopeful lighthearted relaxing fast-paced

4.0

I’ve been on the hunt for new go-to romance authors because I feel like a lot have let me down the past few years—been too cringe, relied on author-hype over actual story worth, just weren’t hitting the way I want a romcom to hit. I was starting to question if maybe I had just out-grown romcoms as a reader. BUT BOY WAS I WRONG. It turns out I just hadn’t found the right fit for me, because between absolutely adoring my first Katherine Center (The Rom-Commers, review  is up) I also got to experience Jasmine Guillory for the first time too… and giiiiiiiirl…

The Wedding Date is a fake-dating, miscommunication MODERATE-spice fest (aka just the right amount to make you blush but not offend your grandma watching you read this from heaven). I was kicking my feet giddy at the chemistry between tight-laced public servant Alexa Monroe and reformed fuckboy (with a heart of gold) surgeon Drew Nichols after they meet in a stuck elevator and she agrees to be his pretend girlfriend at his ex’s wedding.

It was just realistic and delightful, the banter was bantering, the cold dead hearts were thawing, there was a nice amount of thicker body love and working through insecurity without making it an entire personality (like Jennifer Weiner did in The Breakway). I really really enjoyed Guillory’s writing style and character development. My only issues with this book were personal—I don’t love when a miscommunication trope goes too far or on for too long and this was really pushing it. It sometimes felt a bit repetitive at times because of it, all the second-guessing. I also think I would have preferred to read this one entirely from Alexa’s POV, I didn’t need to be in Drew’s and the constant back and forth with that, sometimes in the same scene, pulled me out of the story a bit. But, I’m so glad I picked this one up. She gave me back my love for romcoms and following this one up with Katherine Center’s The Rom-Commers, between the two of them, might have cured me!

Next to try is Talia Hibbert! What’s your favourite romcom?
