Fragments by Dan Wells

5.0

I was worried that after how amazing the first book in this trilogy was that this book would not be able to live up to its high standards. At first it seemed as though this was going to be the case as the first half of the book was a bit slow going with very little happening other than Kira travelling through ruined cities and Long Island being invaded by Partials. However the second half of the book more than made up for this with the
Spoilerdiscovery of another human settlement, all of the answers about the Break that you wanted so badly and the reappearance of Nandita revealing that Ariel and the others are also a new breed of Partial.

This is one of those books that while people are dying all over the place the main characters seem to have an uncanny ability to survive the danger or recover from being shot.
SpoilerSure Samm, Heron and Kira are Partials, but Haru and Marcus are doing a very good job of surviving when the rest of the humans around them are repeatedly wiped out.

I don’t even mind the love triangle that developed in this book. I don’t know whether that is because Marcus is so far away in this book or that Kira didn’t seem that into Marcus in the first place or whatever. But I’d rather she ends up with Samm anyway.
I can’t wait to see what
SpoilerIsolde’s baby is like; the first half human half partial! That was certainly an interesting twist. However, rather than bringing the two species together I wouldn’t be too surprised if either side tried to kill it for being different and an unknown variable.
The whole idea of the two species needing to work together to survive is great but I think it is more likely to backfire and wipe everyone out. I am certainly interested in where Wells is going to take this story in the final book and cannot wait to read it.
This book receives five stars, despite its slow beginning, just because the ending was so good.
