From North to South/Del Norte al Sur by Joe Cepeda, Rene Colato Lainez

This book is a great introduction for children to the realities of family separation, and what a child experiences when a parent is deported. The book found a perfect balance between not being too scary for kids to listen to, and not hiding the fact that deportation is a scary thing. When I read this story to a group of pre-k/K/1 children, they were able to really grasp the situation, and we had a really productive conversation about immigration and what we can do to help others. I wish it had been a tiny bit shorter (the kids were having a bit of a hard time sticking through to the end), but I think this would be a great read for slightly older kids. There are also many opportunities for activities that relate to the book to easily create a full lesson.
