The Shifting Grounds of Race: Black and Japanese Americans in the Making of Multiethnic Los Angeles by Scott Kurashige

4.0

3.5 stars

An interesting look at the Black and Japanese communities of Los Angeles in the 20th century. I was particularly interested in the chapters on housing and the two communities' responses to the internment of Japanese Americans during WWII. The sections on politics were a little trickier for me to absorb. Although the topics discussed are fascinating, I found the book to be quite dense and academic. Not exactly a light read, both the topics explored and for the accessibility of the writing. All the same, definitely worth a read for folks who enjoy academic writing and who are looking to learn more about the history of Los Angeles.
