1. No awards
2. Grade 2-6
3. This book contains numerous American slave songs, the music and an explanation of each song. African slaves wished for their own freedom, homeland, and families. They used songs to express these desires. In conjunction with images, explanations, and music, this book brings these songs to the forefront.
4. This book makes slavery in America, the wishful longing of slaves accessible for younger students to understand. The songs themselves are useful and when combined with the given explanation, makes this book accessible and valuable to students.
5. This book can be used in conjunction with a history lesson to allow students to further understand life as a slave and the cultural influences that contributed to the songs. The book can also be used with a music lesson, for students to read the notes and sing along.
