China Lake by Meg Gardiner

4.0

This is a very solid thriller, with an interesting premise and compelling characters. The protagonist is Evan Delaney, a lawyer who finds herself mixed up with an "end-of-the-world" cult. To make matters worse, the cult has links to her family, and things get personal very quickly.

The action moves swiftly, and there are lots of twists and turns over the course of the novel. Gardiner's writing is very accessible, and although she has a few authorial "ticks" I found a bit distracting -- a tendency to overuse sentence fragments, for example -- but she does manage to realistically create Evan's internal monologue, making the action sequences and torment she feels over the course of the book seem realistic and making the reader find out what happens. There were a few over-the-top comedic moments that fell a bit short for me, but overall it was a very strong read, and I will definitely be reading more from this writer.
