As a History teacher I thought I had a comprehensive understanding of the Second World War but I was not fully aware of the impact on Greece. I read this author’s other book The Island a few years ago and enjoyed it and when this was recommended for me to read I did not hesitate.

The story follows Dimitri and Katerina from their childhood In Thessaloniki through the Second World War and into adulthood. I love books which have a very strong sense of place and this book certainly had that. Set against profound change in Greece you are immersed in the world of different cultures living together and I thought the story telling was sublime. There is a vivid cast of characters and their survival through such a difficult time is well written by the author. I love historical fiction and this is up there as one I will be recommending to others to pick up and read.

I have given this book 5
