Naomi (2019-) #1 by Brian Michael Bendis, David F. Walker, Jamal Campbell, Emanuela Lupacchino

4.0

An amazing start! I don't read DC comics usually, but I saw some panels from this online and the art was so gorgeous I just had to pick it up. And I absolutely don't regret it!

Superman's arrival (or, well, dropping by) in Naomi's small town creates exactly the reaction you'd expect – full-blown excitement in every single resident, and despair in every resident who missed the chance seventeen seconds he spent in their town. But his arrival drags up a secret from the tiny town's past, and it's somehow linked to Naomi's past mysterious past.

This issue is an intriguing start to a brand-new series, with an amazing new character who grabbed my interest immediately. Naomi, as a character, is fleshed out well. She has depth, and emotions (which are explored well!), and relationships with the many people in her town. Plus, her background and family are just so shrouded in mystery, and the issue ends on such a cliffhanger that I just want to know more!!! I really can't wait for the next issue... a month's wait is just too much.

The town and its residents also feel very real. The creators mentioned that they put work into "establishing a strong sense of place", and it shows.

I can't talk too much about everything I loved in this without spoiling it, so my review will have to remain vague, but just know that this is an amazing and easy read and is ABSOLUTELY worth your time. (The only reason this doesn't have five stars is because I'm scared the quality might drop in future, and also because this is just setting up the rest of the series, and I don't want to give it five out of anticipation. But it is BRILLIANT!) The writers have also promised that the rest of the series will remain as show-stopping as this issue, and set up a new path for the DC universe, so that's exciting too!

Also, hats off to the artists and Naomi's creator. Her design is amazing – I ADORE her hair! Those little gold clasps are everything – and her fashion is so cool. I mean, that cropped bomber? Hello? Naomi's best friend Annabelle looks amazing too.

This review probably has more words than the comic itself, but it is absolutely worth my effort and raving. It's great! Do yourself a favour and read NAOMI right now!
