I really love mysteries which take a look at fictional characters and turn their stories into murder mysteries, and this is a pretty enjoyable one. Even if it features Scrooge himself, there is a massive array of fictional characters from Dickins's other books, as well as Dickins himself (in this case, as a journalist who aids Scrooge). The mystery is great, and even though Scrooge isn't exactly likeable (when was he ever?), he does make for a compelling mystery protagonist. Saying that, his assistant Adelaide Owen was utterly annoying. It felt as if Oliver couldn't decide whether to make her an independent women ahead of her time or an emotional, useless women who follows Scrooge around. Because of that, I never felt like I understood or liked her character at all. This is still a fun mystery and if you are as much a fan of Dickins's work as I am, you will enjoy this book despite its imperfections.
