The Foretelling of Georgie Spider: The Tribe, Book 3 by Ambelin Kwaymullina

5.0

I have read The Tribe trilogy back to back and have run out of stars to express how much this series has moved me. Reading it at a time in history when the Australian government has denied a proposal for an indigenous voice to parliament, it has felt like too many elements are still too real in our present-day Australia - a confronting reality. The Tribe trilogy can be read and enjoyed at various levels - like Tolkein or CS Lewis - but underneath is a much deeper and stronger world view - an indigenous voice crying out to be heard, challenging the rhetoric of hate, presenting a hope for the future that rests in the hands of the young.

As the author says in her author's note: 'In the Foretelling of Georgie Spider, a better future is ultimately created by the global interconnection of those who choose compassion over intolerance, courage over fear, and love over hate. Perhaps this could be the real world.'

To read all three books is to understand something of the past from an indigenous point of view, to recognise the present all too alarmingly and to glimpse hope for the future. At the same time, these books offer great story-telling, engrossing story-lines, complex characters, and more than one twist. A Good Read and, I think a 'must read' for everyone who calls Australia home.
