Tower Lord by Anthony Ryan

✰ 4.5 STARS! ✰

TOWER LORD was definitely a sequel I was the most excited to get to, and also the one I'd been putting off for a long time. The mixed reviews left that annoying niggle in my head that I would be disappointed in this too.

And after finally reading it, I do understand why people may have felt that way. Because Tower Lord veers away from many things that made Blood Song a favourite of most. That being said, the different direction it went in was still in my 'I Love it' zone.

So, after being stuck with Vaelin for about two decades of an amazing coming-of-age kind of story, we are now following four different people. Three of whom we already know. For me, this transition made sense. We learnt about the world along with Vaelin. We know how things are. Or have been. To an extent. Now it's time for us to see the things happening.

What I did miss though - the camaraderie between Vaelin and his brothers from the order, learning about stuff with them, Sherin, Frentis's slippery little hands.

But there are things to love in this too - Badass female protagonists entering the story, following Frentis ('cause he was ome of my favorite characters, okay?), seeing more of the world (though I would've quite liked a much, much more detailed map), different people coming together against the common enemy, surprising lgbt representation, the amazing battle scenes and so on...

On a side note, I keep underestimating how huge the cast of characters is. First of all, there are so many similar sounding names that had me going sometimes 'Hey, wasn't this guy already dead?' or something along those lines. And secondly, it was very easy to forget when and where they previously appeared in the story which made me happy that I had an ecopy on my hand, because damn! You should look at my search history!

So, with how things ended in this book, I'm eager to pick up the next book - what happens next with Vaelin's Song, certain Alpirans we met, the very last line of the book and, the reunion I was waiting for through all the 700+ pages - which better happen within the first half of 'Queen of Fire', or else....

Nothing. I can do nothing except cry for a very long time.
