Mindy Kim and the Yummy Seaweed Business by Lyla Lee

Very cute! I did a pre-read before letting my 8 year old start it. There’s nothing objectionable in this book at all. No back talk or sassy language. No glorification of bad behavior. My daughter is halfway through now and loves it. We both really enjoy the peek into the life of a Korean-American girl. She told me she loves the cute pictures and learning about Korean culture. I thought it was a really sweet story. I really liked that Sally made an effort to be nice to the new kid (Mindy) and to not judge her or make fun of her for her differences. I also liked that Mindy apologized to Sally at the end. The only “trigger warning” I can think of that other parents might want to know about - we learn in the beginning of the story that Mindy’s mom recently passed away after being sick for a long time. Her dad is very sad, and that is talked about throughout the story. I think it’s all handled wonderfully, but if your child recently lost someone and can’t handle references to death, I’d preview first. We will definitely be continuing this series!
