Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys

This book was just gorgeous. Sadly, I must admit that I haven't read Jane Eyre, but I know the story well enough (There was a summer when my mom became obsessed with the book and watched every movie version of it ever made.) and I definitely am interested in reading it after this novel. The writing style is a bit difficult to get into, but after a while the words began to flow beautifully and I just fell into the story. The imagery was very vivid and intense. Watching how completely Rochester controls Antoinette's life and forces her to become dependent on him is eye-opening. The undeserved hatefulness which almost everybody in Antoinette's world, except for Christophine, feels towards her is shocking. Every novel transports the reader into a different world. The difference here is, I'm still struggling to get out of it... Truly beautiful and inspiring literature.
