The Enchanted Wanderer by Nikolai Leskov

3.0

I didn't like that the book was really just a bunch of mostly-unconnected vignettes linked through the framing device of, "these things all happened to me." I always like a fuller plot. But the vignettes are weird, surprising, and compelling. You do keep wondering what happens next. And the enchanted wanderer's voice is exceptionally well-rendered in this translation; it's unlike anything else I've read. Very informal, blunt, pointed. I don't know exactly how to explain, but his voice reminds me a lot of Edward Norton's.
