Mr. Lemoncello's All-Star Breakout Game by Chris Grabenstein

4.0

The Lemoncello series is always so odd to review. It feels more like I’m reading a game than an actual story. I regularly don’t remember the individual installments of the series, just the general idea of the series. The individual characters are all very flat, even Kyle (protagonist) and Charles (antagonist) have very little depth to them beyond their two-dimensional characteristics.

Despite these “complaints”, I did enjoy this fourth book more than the previous two installments in the series. I think I’ve learned to just embrace the cheesiness and the weirdness and roll with it at this point. Yes, a lot of the ideas and plot points are over the top, but that’s kind of the point I’ve realized. For example, a 7th grader called an 8th grader her hero because of how much she reads. That’s inherently stupid and unrealistic, but by embracing the absurdity of Grabenstein’s writing, I could find some semblance of humor within it.
