The Promise by Bryan Konietzko, Michael Dante DiMartino, Gene Luen Yang

3.0

i was excited to read about republic city’s origin (and the air acolytes!!!), especially since i just finished legend of korra. i also wanted to see how the story picked up after ending because the ramification of a 100 year war must be massive.

the book mostly focuses on zuko and aang as they form the harmonic restoration movement to remove fire nation colonies from the earth kingdom. but zuko withdraws his support after seeing the oldest colony, yu dao and how both fire nation and earth kingdom citizens have formed their own community.

i’ve seen some people say that the gaang was out of character in this comic and while i can see where they are coming from i actually really like the characterization in this comic. katara and aang being gross and in love calling each other sweetie is so in character i can’t even. and with zuko going to ask his father for advice on how to run the fire nation make sense when u realize that he’s been looking for ozai’s recognition and pride for his entire life, so when things got rough and he is looking for control, of course he would go to ozai. lastly with aang agreeing to kill to zuko, i read as him trying please zuko by agreeing but then had a moral dilemma on whether or not he would do it (especially after talking to roku)

the highlight of this was definitely aang and zuko’s relationship. they have always been my favorite pair so seeing their dynamic explored was so fun. zuko asking aang to kill him, zuko feeling ‘relief’ after aang killed him in their shared nightmare, but him still trusting that aang would save when he fell in the chasm. and aang severing his connection with roku after figuring out he would kill his great grandson (zuko).

toph is one of my favorite characters (like number two)
but the metal bending academy arc just felt out of place for me? idk it kept throwing me off and i wish they made a separate comic for it because at one point i was getting annoyed because i was more interested in the other plot and didn’t end up enjoying it. that was like the only major concern i had with the comic.
