Light Is the New Black: A Guide to Answering Your Soul's Callings and Working Your Light by Rebecca Campbell

2.0

I’m between a 2 and a 3 for this book. It was a very quick read. Pretty superficial and many of the ideas discussed aren’t novel. There are a few instances of what I consider to be emotional/spiritual bypassing like when the author prays for her readers to hit rock bottom (WTF) and when she says your hurt happens for you and not to you. I’m not interested in toxic positivity and at times this borders on that. I also hate the use of the word “tribe” in “enlightened” groups- it feels culturally appropriative and not creative. At the end, there were times where she contradicts and flip flops- in one instance saying “we are all one” and then the next chapter saying people who don’t support you aren’t your people. And then suggesting that some people who aren’t as highly conscious as you are “a few steps behind.” So wait, are we all the same or are some of us different? I love that Rebecca is living her truth and was vulnerable enough to share her work. Some of the mantras and practice/meditation suggestions are really lovely. I love that she is encouraging all of us to embrace our weird. I found some reviewers complaining about the grammatical errors but this didn’t bother me as I found her writing style to be straightforward. Overall, okay read.
