The Red Pony
by John Steinbeck
I was thinking about what I wanted to say about this novel. It's very short and sweet, and a bit tragic in the same way as [b:The Hunchback of Notre-Dame|30597|The Hunchback of Notre-Dame|Victor Hugo|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1388342667s/30597.jpg|3043569]. And then on the back cover I read a very apt description: Unlike most coming-of-age stories, the cycle does not end with a hero "matured" by circumstances....The Red Pony is imbued with a sense of loss. Jody's encounters with birth and death express a common theme in Steinbeck's fiction: They are parts of the ongoing process of life, "resolving" nothing.
