This is such a beautiful story. The writing is so easy to read, whilst simultaneously exploring so many different things - the power of words, war, death, family. This book had a huge impact on me in the best way - definitely my favourite read of 2020 so far.
Despite this book sitting on my shelf for so long, I had managed to miss the fact that it was narrated by death. This was such an interesting twist on a WWII historical fiction, and gave a really brilliant (and both humorous and serious) perspective. We follow a young girl who goes to stay with a German family - here she learns to read and discovers the power of words - both from her books and from a Jew that her family hides in their basement.
I particularly loved the 'book inside a book' mixed media style segments, which really helped you to see inside the lives of the characters and their thoughts. I would recommend that everyone reads this book - and I cannot wait to watch the film now too.
