I have to admit that I might have added this book to my wishlist quite some time ago, after all it's a little bit of a fairytale retelling. However, the original cover of the book was not really my thing. It sounds shallow, but it's one of the reasons the book never made it on my shelves. Until I discovered the remade covers, covers that were much more taste and fitted the fairytale vibe. Same book, different vibe and all of a sudden I wanted to read this series badly.

There is nothing as interesting in romance novels, if you ask me, as royal drama. Since most of the modern royals don't show much of their private life we have no idea what their life is exactly like, but we all like to think about it, dream about and we all like to believe they're stuck in the middle ages. And that means that royals and true love is not the most successful combination. After all, true love is rarely the best political match.

What I liked about this book is that the main characters really had to overcome their own prejudices towards the other and even their whole way of thinking. That means that the relationship grew only very very slowly. He needed to break out of his shell, needed to allow himself to love and care to begin with. She was constantly held back by expectations and duty. Her clear idea of how a royal should behave and what she could and couldn't do didn't help matters along.

I also loved how not one character in this book was portrayed in a black-and-white kind of way, apart from maybe Alaric. All characters made mistakes, all characters did things they probably shouldn't have done and yet all characters also got the chance to explain their actions, feelings and way of thinking. Therefore I started caring about a lot of those characters quite quickly and now I hope all of them will get their own book!

I can't wait to read the next one!
