The Summons by Peter Lovesey

5.0

An absolute page-turner. It's not Bleak House, but that's fine: I assume the author intended to write a riproaring mystery/suspense/thriller and he achieved that in spades. I'm finding this series literally unputdownable, at least in the sense that I'm trying to get a chapter or so in on my e-reader, in bed, before sleeping, but sleep is impossible and I'm staying up far past my bedtime. (I have no such insomnia when sampling lesser books at the same time of night).

I had zero idea what the solution would be, to an extent that was almost Christie-an (she was a master of giving you one solution, then a mere handful of pages before the end tossing it out and revealing the true state of affairs), but when the ending came, boy, it landed. How have I not heard of this fellow? I just googled him: 304,000 hits. Louise Penny (who I don't care for): 2,200,000. Not fair! He's not completely unknown, he has his wikipedia page, he's written 50-odd books, and he's won CWA awards, he's even had some books turned into a TV series, and yet, I really think he's unsung.

And I have nowhere else to sing about him, other than here, so "Tra la la la liffic, Lovesey is terrific!"

(Note: I'm a writer, so I suffer when I offer fewer than five stars. But these aren't ratings of quality, they're a subjective account of how much I liked the book: 5* = an unalloyed pleasure from start to finish, 4* = enjoyed it, 3* = readable but not thrilling, 2* = disappointing, and 1* = hated it.)
