Scott Pilgrim vs. the Universe by Bryan Lee O’Malley
3.0
Look, I’m not going to sit here and pretend Scott Pilgrim is some deep, life-changing masterpiece. It’s ridiculous. It’s messy. It’s full of characters making terrible life choices. And yet… I had a blast.
The story? Nonsense. A slacker dude has to battle his girlfriend’s evil exes like it’s a video game boss rush? Rubbish. The characters? Mostly terrible people making questionable decisions. The pacing? All over the place.
But here’s the thing—it's fun rubbish. The dialogue is snappy, the humor lands more often than not, and the sheer absurdity of it all somehow works. The art? Simple but full of energy. The fight scenes? Completely over-the-top in the best way.
Would I recommend it? If you like chaotic nonsense and don’t mind a protagonist who probably needs to spend a few years in therapy, sure. If you’re looking for deep character development and emotional maturity… maybe look elsewhere.
Also hopefully the library may have the next one because I want to continue reading this series but definitely not enough to physically own the book you know?
