Down Among the Women by Fay Weldon

2.0

I would have to agree with other reviews in that the nature this book is written in is somewhat uncomfortable to read and feels a bit detatched, having read the book I feel you don't get a very close connection with the characterse which is a shame. Once I had finished reading the book I reread the first couple of pages, which is actually quite enjoyable as it sort of starts at the end by sharing the various situations of the women. I do enjoy the repitition of "Down among the women" throughout the book as I feel it emphasises the harshness of the situations. I think the various situations of these women are hard hitting, and I think it is important that the male characters don't really have a strong presence, except for the issues they inflict on the women. Overall its a relatively easy read and is intersting to see how the roles of women has (or arguably hasn't changed) however I felt the writing and the characters are very detatched and as a reader you are not fully immersed into the story.
