The Goophered Grapevine by Charles W. Chesnutt

3.0

Another reviewer called this story "very clever" and I have to agree; this book is quite clever. The story Uncle Julius tells is a very compelling tale and Chestnutt's whole story comes to a surprising conclusion. I particularly liked the supernatural element of this story. I personally did not struggle too much with the heavy dialect, but I know that it can be hard. Reading the story out loud helps to understand the dialect more. I also suggest pushing through the story even if you're struggling; while it isn't my favorite story, it is still rewarding.
