Cloak & Silence by Sherrilyn Kenyon

lighthearted tense slow-paced

1.0

I haven't picked up a book by Sherrilyn Kenyon before so I decided to jump right in with a book I had been gifted. Turns out - don't start in the middle of this series. You need to understand the first six books to get what's going on in this one.

The writing is good but it's not really my style. It felt like there was a lot of nothing going on for most of the story and since I didn't know all the background to what happened before, I was very, very lost. I think Sherrilyn is a good writer, but I definitely needed to know all of the background to get anything about the story. Like the weird Phrixian race - I don't know what it is, what they look like, anything. The two men falling in love was fantastic, but I couldn't understand their differences since I didn't know why humans and Phrixians shouldn't be friends.

There were a lot of stereotypes and the homophobia was... not amazing. I can tell the writer doesn't normally write M/M romances and well... it didn't work well but I will take the attempt as a positive since it means this fictional world has M/M romances...

Overall, good story and I'm sure fans of this series will like it.

One out of five stars.
