Finding Miracles by Julia Alvarez

I haven't read it in forever, but it was one of my favourites in middle school. I absolutely recommend it for anyone not quite old enough for YA books, but mature enough to handle darker subject material. There is a lot of talk about not only racism but war and oppression, as well as the struggles of adopted transracial children.

Also, I remember Pablo as being possibly the best love interest ever written in a book for this age group, so if you're looking for a very sweet and age appropriate "love story" to go with your plot, I'd definitely give this one a go.
