Rites & Desires by Amanda Cherry

5.0

I was given an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Rites and Desires tells the story of the beautiful, charming, ambitious, and ruthless Ruby Killingsworth and her desire to regain her magic. Throw in Loki (yes, that Loki), a seduction, a magical artifact, some magical help--personified Blights (Doubt, Ruin, Pestilence among others, and yes, they are my favorite part of this book) with writing that is whip-smart, laugh out loud funny. This story is clever, engaging, and pure fun. Ruby is a character that is unique, not just for her magical ability, but for her relentless honesty with others and herself. This is a woman that defies expectations in wondrous ways. I'd love to see more of her.

Rites and Desires takes place in the Cobalt City universe. This wasn't a universe I was familiar with, but the story balances giving the reader enough exposition to grasp what is happening without getting bogged down in facts. The pacing is fast through out, the references feel especially apt, and there is a diversity of characters that is done in a way that is both intentional and subtle.

If you like female-led stories, adventure, romance and magic, I'd heartily recommend this book.
