Each of Us a Desert by Mark Oshiro

I wish I could’ve connected to the characters. For some reason I just couldn’t. The plot took a while to get going and when it did I didn’t care because I didn’t care about any of the characters or the setting. I was super intrigued by the world and the magic system, I didn’t get all of the answers I was hoping for but that’s probably just a me having the wrong expectations and not the fault of the book. I will say that I think as this being the second book by Oshiro that I have read he tends to add events in his stories that are overly coincidental and personally it takes me out of the story every time.

I also really enjoyed the mixture of Spanish and English in the narrative without need to over-explain, bilinguals don’t just speak in more than one language they think in those languages too and I always enjoy when narrative choices line up with that.

I’m bummed that I didn’t love this because in theory this is my perfect book, it’s skillfully written, it’s sapphic, it’s a fantasy inspired by Latin x cultures. All of the pieces were there they just didn’t come together in a super satisfying way for me.
