Doomsday Clock #1: That Annihilated Place by Gary Frank, Geoff Johns, Brad Anderson

1.0

Woof, off to a very underwhelming start. Almost everything about this issue, from the writing to the art to the layouts and contents of the frame, just feel like a big step backward from the quality and density of the original.

Granted, this issue is all about setup, but it's clearly missing the original's ability to tell engrossing character-based stories while simultaneously and surreptitiously laying the foundation for later issues. This, by contrast, just feels thin and blunt, and lacking any of the qualities that made the characters and world of the original feel so human.

Hopefully the quality picks up quickly, or the payoff is worth the clunky setup. As of now I'm largely giving up on the idea that it might be a worthy sequel, and hust hoping for it to be a worthwhile read. But hey, I'd be thrilled to be wrong.
