I almost gave this four stars, but the ending felt out of place. It broke the cohesiveness of the story's pacing. Other than that, this was a cozy beauty and the beast retelling with lots of angst and tension. This was truly a slow burn, which I appreciated.  This book has one of my favorite tropes:
When the h goes missing snd the H loses it trying to find her
If you hate the miscommunication trope, then this book is not for you! I'd rate this book a 1/5 spice.  Also, I liked the gloomy atmosphere that the book was set in. As someone who prefers realistic dialogue in historical novels, I was satisfied with this one. There weren't any out of place modern colloquialisms.
