Alternating Current by Octavio Paz

3.0

Criticism, regardless of its stripe, is typically a form of writing that eludes me. I’m a fairly intelligent being, but the depths to which criticism delves usually involves me spending more time re-reading what I just read than truly comprehending the text. This book most likely deserves more than 3 stars, but its inaccessibility to someone who happens across it (and was expecting something different, to be frank) does not lend itself to a more favorable review. I’m certain that Octavio Paz is a brilliant writer and there were moments of lucidity in the text for me. However, on the whole, the density of these essays made it a less than pleasurable experience.
