Green Arrow, Volume 4: The Kill Machine by Marcelo Maiolo, Jeff Lemire, Andrea Sorrentino

4.0

It is books like this that make me love reading comics.

I have read very little DC before this, and no Arrow. As such, I was pleased to discover that Lemire's run with the character makes for an excellent entry point with a story that stands largely on its own. Lemire and Sorrentino are one of my favorite pairs in comics and this volume is no exception.

Though not flawless in delivery, the creative team takes Arrow on a challenging journey that costs him almost everything he has. This is also episodic storytelling as I think it should be done--not simply moving from one adventure to the next, but layering and tying together each piece of the storyline to form a complex and engaging plot.

Writing, art, colors--everything comes together well in this volume, crafting a nuanced and emotional storyline that makes some basically familiar superhero plot elements feel fresh and exciting.
