 Chiang makes his readers work for it. I read elsewhere - possibly in a Goodreads review - that Chiang has a day job as a technical writer, which makes complete sense when working through some dense academic paragraphs. Unfortunately, I felt that these science/mathematics/physics/linguistics strands came at the expense of more robust characterisation, which would have engaged me more as a reader and granted greater continuity. 3.5 stars
