The Antares Maelstrom by Greg Cox

5.0

This was the first Star Trek book I've read after recently starting to watch TOS and I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would. Usually I don't think of myself as a huge sci-fi fan but the characters were so well written and the narration was engaging and funny and the plot was so easy to get invested in that I can't give this book anything other than five stars.

I've looked around at some other reviews and I have to say the plot with Spock and Chekov investigating the contraband tea was actually where my favorite parts came from. Sure it wasn't necessary or as relevant to the other plot lines in the book but the chemistry between the characters created a very enjoyable dynamic and resulted in some truly hilarious dialogue.

Being new to the fandom and, really, the genre, I don't have any comparisons to make to previous books in the Star Trek universe but I would have no problem recommending this book to anyone who asked about it.
