this was one of the best non-fiction books that i’ve ever read. so accessible, so humorous, so engaging, so compassionately written, so insightful - and SO well researched and written. and unlike most nonfiction books, this never felt self indulgent or overlong or in need of editing. it was perfect in length and pace and indulgence. 

amanda montell really excels at getting her point across in the most interesting and understandable way possible, that makes change feel entirely possible and makes education feel empowering rather than burdensome. 

i would genuinely reccomend this book to everyone, and not just those who are interested in linguistics. this is what i wish linguistics was, but alas, my uni didn’t really feel the same way. 

this has only inspired me to be more thoughtful about how i speak and why i speak in the way i do. simply brilliant.
