The Beauty of the Moment by Tanaz Bhathena

4.0

I was pleasantly surprised with this book. I needed a cute diverse romance and The Beauty of the Moment delivered wildly.

At first I wasn’t sure if this was going to be something, but then we got to Malcolm’s POV and I was hooked. It’s very clear from when he was introduced that Malcolm was going to steal the show. His backstory, his friends, his inner turmoil was something I was wholly interested in.

Susan wasn’t a bad character in her own right. She had intense problems to deal with—moving to a new country, dealing with family issues, making new friends/ keeping old ones and figuring out how to tell her parents that she wants to pursue art instead of being a doctor or an engineer. She carried her weight this book, being likeable and relatable in many respects...but I just enjoyed Malcolm a whole lot more.

Their love story was adorable. The bad boy/girl girl trope has been done though the ages, but I’ve never minded it if it was done right. And this was done right. Malcolm wasn’t toxic or dangerous; he just had a hard time dealing with his past. Which made his character development all the better.

There were some great side characters in this book, I loved Mahtab, Steve and Heather. They added a layer of realness to the story. I also love how Malcolm is not the typical “hot brooding bad boy”. He was not the best looking guy out there, but he was charismatic, and that was what drew people to him.

Being Canadian, having this book set in Canada was a breath of fresh air for me. Also all the points for the diversity, and for having that very important fund raiser be a plot device.

All in all great read. Give it a try
